When Prayers Seem to Go Unanswered

A Family Picture

The 2016 Mutual theme album is a collection of songs written by Latter-day Saint youth about staying true to our beliefs in today’s ever-changing world. Brynleigh Kinne contributed her song, “When the Time Is Right,” cowritten by Nik Day. We asked her about the personal experiences that inspired the song’s motivating message.

You can listen to and download Brynleigh’s song and the rest of the album at pressforward.lds.org.

What message do you share in this song? Why did you think it was important to sing about?

My song is about how God doesn’t always answer our prayers how or when we want, but He will always answer them. We need to trust in Him and His timing, not our own.

The scriptures say: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6).

In a world where everything is so immediately accessible to us, we need to learn how our Father in Heaven communicates with us. We are constantly asking questions and wondering why we’re not getting answers, but sometimes we just need to be patient.

Was there a time you felt God wasn’t answering your prayers? What gave you hope?

My dad lost his job and my grandma got really sick. As a family, we kept saying the same prayers over and over again. My grandma passed away, and my dad didn’t find a job for two years.

It was really frustrating at times, but we kept praying and we had faith that it would all work out. During this time, my mom had to pick up an extra job or two and we all had to help out around the house. Through this experience we became closer as a family.

I learned more at this time in my life then ever before. I learned that if we don’t have the answers, we have to move forward in faith and everything will work out. I found hope by trusting that God has a plan.

What advice would you give to someone going through a hard time and wondering if God is there?

To someone who is going through a hard time, I would say no matter how alone you feel God is always there for you. Even when it might feel like He is not listening and you aren’t receiving answers, press forward with faith. Don't stop doing the things that He has asked us to do, no matter the sacrifice.

I have a testimony that He is always there for you because you are His child and He loves you more than you can understand. He cries when you cry and is so joyful when you are living righteously like He did. Have faith in His plan and never doubt His divine love for you.
