Taking Charge: 4 Ways To Manage Stress

June 9, 2015

No matter your lifestyle, stress is bound to sneak in from time to time. While not all stress is entirely bad, too much stress affects your overall health, leading to physical and emotional issues. By finding positive ways to take charge of stress, you can find relief from its negative consequences.

1. Simplify and prioritize your daily tasks.

Your daily to-do list might consist of a hundred tasks. But do all of them really have to get done today—or at all? Simplify your life by simplifying your list. Rank each item in terms of priority; then work your way through the list. If you find you don’t have time for the less pressing to-dos, consider setting aside special time for them later in the week or even asking for help from family and friends who can get them done.

2. Meditate.

Meditation not only relieves stress; it also allows you to be more in tune with the Spirit, which will help you recognize answers to your prayers.

President David O. McKay once said, “We pay too little attention to the value of meditation, a principle of devotion. … Meditation is one of the most secret, most sacred doors through which we pass into the presence of the Lord.”

Find time to meditate—morning, afternoon, or night.

3. Smile and laugh more.

It takes more muscles, and therefore more energy, to frown than it does to smile. Laughing is proven to relax the body, combating stress that causes tension. Most people wear stress on their face and in their shoulders. As you smile and laugh more, you will relieve that tension. You may even help relieve someone else of the stress and tension in his or her life.

4. Give yourself a moment to step away.

You can’t avoid every stressful situation—your crying child needs to be tended to, that work project will not complete itself, and those bills need to be paid. However, you can and should give yourself some time to step back from the situation, take some deep breaths, and focus on something else for a little while so you can come back to the issue refreshed. You are more likely to handle the situation successfully if you do.
