Lessons of Service from Heber J. Grant

February 5, 2015

Mormon Channel Kids is a new app you can download today. The app features several interactive stories written for children. “The Coat” is one of the stories included in the app and it tells the story of a young boy, Heber J. Grant, giving his new coat to a shivering needy boy. Watch the video below:

At age 25 Heber J. Grant was called to serve as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Thirty-seven years later, at age 62, he became President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. President Grant served in this capacity until his death at age 88.

Under the direction of President Grant, the Church launched several initiatives to help the poor and needy. In 1936 the Church Welfare Program was announced. Among the objectives of this program was that the poor and needy would have access to the resources and opportunities that would make them self-reliant. Heber J. Grant said of the program, “The aim of the Church is to help the people to help themselves. Work is to be re-enthroned as the ruling principle of the lives of our Church membership.”

Deseret Industries was also established as part of the initiative. A portion of the history of the Church Welfare Program reads:

“The first Deseret Industries store opened in Salt Lake City on August 12, 1938, in an old post office building. In the same month, the First Presidency and Presiding Bishopric sent a letter to stimulate support of the new Deseret Industries operation, calling it an ‘effort to provide opportunities for individuals to become self-sustaining.’"

“The operation was described as ‘essentially a salvaging project’ where Church members would donate usable materials for resale and consequently provide work for those ‘who might find it difficult to qualify for employment in private industry.”

“The Coat” story and the Church Welfare Program are just two examples of Heber J. Grant’s dedication to serving the poor and needy. He also taught extensively on achieving financial security, avoiding debt, and the fruits of hard work.
